A striking Oil on Canvas take on a Twilight in the countryside by French Painter Eugène Sandrini
Born in a modest family, his father a factory worker, Eugène Sandrini was born in 1925 in La Seyne-sur-Mer in the Var department, in the south of France.
He developed a talent for drawing from an early age. As a teenager, he even decorated the staff room at his middle school.
Since being an artist at the time was not considered a serious profession, he was encouraged to continue his studies and became a civil servant.
He held various positions in his native region, while pursuing his passion in his free time.
Then suddenly, at the age of 45, he decided to become a full-time painter and make a living from his art. Finally free, he traveled through Provence, as well as Brittany, Savoie, and Switzerland.
A nature lover, he tirelessly roamed the countryside, stopping here and there when his sensitivity prompted him to pick up his brushes.
He would say: “I learned to contemplate nature from dawn to dusk, to admire its hills in a thousand colors.”
Strongly inspired by the Impressionists, he painted ‘en plein air’ throughout his career, to experience the feeling and atmosphere of the moment.
He painted until his last breath in 1998.
It was in the Var region, on the La Verdière plateau, that Sandrini captured the fabulous luminosity of a sun disappearing behind the hills, igniting the sky and the surrounding nature with his entire palette of ochres. In perfect balance, where the horizon line divides the two parts of the composition at its center, the artist, with his keen eye and steady hand, has created this landscape of fantastic depth and power.
Through multidirectionnel strokes and generous impasto, all the vibrations of the ground and the celestial reflections reach us through this magnificent canvas.
All of Eugène Sandrini’s sensitivity and generosity are concentrated in this work, which ranks among his finest achievements.
