Born in Marseille in 1871 and deceased in the same City in 1957, Adolphe Louis Gaussen was a French painter of the Mediterranean coast.
He studied painting at Marseille’s Ecole des Beaux Arts before joining Jean-Baptiste Olive’s studio.
Recognized for his talent, he exhibited at the Salon de artistes Français from 1893, became curator of the Musée Cantini in Marseille, was appointed official painter of the navy in 1928 and was awarded the Légion d’Honneur.
Strongly inspired by maritime scenes, his works mainly depict the various sites along the Mediterranean coast.
The influence of Jean-Baptiste Olive is very much in evidence in these seaside views.
