Beautiful Gilded Bronze Sculpture of ‘The Rooster’ by Alfred Barye (1839-1895).
A Gilded Bronze proof representing a standing rooster, croaking, by the sculptor Alfred Barye, also known as Barye Fils.
The male is proud, he croaks with his head held high, in a very realistic posture.
The works of Alfred Barye, show a very high degree of detail, execution and finish, equal to the works of his father.
The sculpture is signed “A.BARYE” in hollow, on the naturalist terrace, richly chiseled.
The statue stands on a green ‘Vert de Mer’ or Genoa Marble pedestal which is in perfect condition.
Alfred Barye, renowned French sculptor, also known as “the Son”, or “Alf Barye”, was born in Paris, on January 21, 1839.
Alfred Barye was a student of his father, the sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye (1795-1875) who is considered the Master of the Animalier Sculptors movement in France.
He trained and worked in his father’s workshop and foundry.
His work includes animal bronzes as well as orientalist and comic subjects.
He exhibited at the Salon from 1864 to 1882.
The works of Alfred Barye show a very high degree of detail, execution and finish, equaling the works of his father.
He signed many of his sculptural works as Barye or A. Barye, the same signature used by his father. This has caused as much confusion today as it did during his lifetime, and many of Alfred’s models are mistakenly attributed to and sold as his father’s works.
After much family disagreement and at the insistence of his father, he began signing his work as Alf. Barye, and later A. Barye Fils.
